old parents with son in home

When we look to buy or rent a house, we consider many things. When we have our parents or other elderly relatives at home, the needs extend.

Everything that is needed is bought keeping in mind the comfort of our parents.

As the world’s population ages, more and more people are likely to have elderly parents residing with them. This presents a unique challenge for those who want to furnish and decorate their homes in a way that is both comfortable and attractive for an older generation.

It can be challenging to find large enough furniture but not too heavy or expensive, curtains that will block out light while allowing in privacy, soft yet supportive beds, etc.

When furnishing a home, you should consider the necessities like kitchen, dining room, bedroom, etc., that all people require. You additionally need to ensure other comforts an average household offers too.

Some of the considerations one should take into account when furnishing a home for elderly parents in India are as follows:

  1. Excess is not an excellent choice

Avoid stuffing your parent’s room with a lot of furniture. Make sure furniture doesn’t obstruct their walking path. However, they shouldn’t be placed so far that they can’t use them for support.

  1. Ideal bed for comfort

Mattresses must not be very hard or very soft as both cause back pain; selecting between will be ideal for parents and everyone in the home.

Sheets must not be light-colored, and preferably the material must be cotton, as it is comfortable and reduces heat.

  1. Furnish the room

  • Invest in minimal pieces to hold their essentials like a bedside table, a chest of drawers, and a reading chair – depending on their habits.
  • Curtains must be selected keeping the preference of the parents. Few like sunshine to be entirely blocked, while some prefer sunlight and fresh air to enter.
  • The sofa set in the living room must neither be too short nor too high as it strains the joints and cause discomfort to our parents.
  • Set up well-lit areas to ensure proper lighting in all parts of your home.
  • Adequate lighting can make it easier for the family elders to find their way around. This can also minimize the risk of injuries.
  • With a window right by the bed, this bedroom maximizes natural light.
  • The bathroom must have bars wherever necessary for grip and mobility. Injuries getting on and off the toilet are relatively high in people aged 65 and older. Grab bars are a must-have as they offer additional support to hold on to while sitting down or getting up.
  • Plants must be placed wherever suited to maintain a healthy atmosphere.
  • Mats and other things must be anti-skid to avoid slipping.
  • If there are sharp edges for the furniture, it is essential to make the edges safe.
  • If the space is limited, the stuffing of items must be avoided to ensure proper utilization of space.
  • Any furnishing item must not be in the middle of the path as it increases the chances of injury.
  • Wall clocks must be visible from a distance without causing much strain to the eyes.
  • The colors of the wall and the décor must not be too bright.

It is the responsibility of the children to provide a comfortable and secure home for their parents. When furnishing, these basic necessities must be kept in mind.
